The Science of Supercroc!

Working with Paleontologist and National Geographic Explorer in Residence, Paul Sereno, Douglas Irvine creates sounds for the fearsome, 40 foot long Supercroc, Sarcosuchus. Premiering at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, the exhibit features the 110 million year old Supercroc along with Sereno’s spinosaur discovery, Suchomimus.

Doug's sound design work interprets vocal sounds of both adult and hatchling sized Supercroc specimens, as well as a five-minute soundscape that accompanies the 30 foot long paleo-art scene by Raul Martin (above right). The Science of Supercroc: March 15 - May 27, 2002 at the Museum of Science and Industry. Supercroc Sound Track,
A Wall Mural Speaks
What did it sound like when two Cretaceous giants met along the ancient flood plains of North Africa 110 million years ago? Exploring the auditory possibilities, Doug applied his sound art to this captivating scene depicting Sarcosuchus (Supercroc) and Suchomimus.

Created by paleo-artist Raul Martin, the artwork was transformed into a dramatic, 30-foot long mural for the Project Exploration exhibit, The Science of Supercroc. Martin's artwork was also featured as a two-page spread in Paul Sereno’s National Geographic Magazine article, "Supercroc" (see NG Mag., December 2001).
